Perseid Meteor Shower
July 17, 2016 @ 8:00 pm - August 24, 2016 @ 5:00 am
This annual meteor shower is a favorite among astronomy lovers because on a moonless night you’ll have the opportunity to see as many as 50 or more meteors per hour in the Northern Hemisphere. While the Perseid Meteor Shower will occur between July 17th – August 24th, the optimal time will be on the 11th, 12th and 13th.
The best time to watch for the meteors is in the wee hours after midnight and into early dawn. However if you’re lucky enough you might be able to catch a earthgrazer in the evenings. This is a long, slow and colorful meteor that travels horizontally across the evening sky. Earthgrazer meteors can only occur in the early to mid-evenings when the radiant point of the shower is close to the horizon.
You won’t need any special equipment or extensive knowledge of the constellations to enjoy the Perseid Meteor Shower. However you will want to find a location with a dark and open sky for observing this event.
Our astronomy calendar was created to keep our fans posted on current and upcoming events in the night sky. This is a great resource for astronomy clubs, telescope hobbyists, and outdoor enthusiasts.
